How does CommVault Edge Protection Work?

Install Backup Agent

Commvault backup software is installed on the end-user's device. This device can be a laptop, desktop, smartphone or tablet. Once installed, this program will begin to back up the files assigned by the administrator / customer.

Data upload

Once these files are compiled, compressed and deduplicated, they are transmitted over the internet to our specially designed CommCell servers. The transmit process is encrypted from the moment it leaves the end device.

File Restore

Once the backup files have been backed up to our CommCell, they are assigned to a specific location. From there, files can be opened by the end-user and restored as needed.

Step-by-step instructions
  • Head over to the ThinkOn Commvault Connect Website and click register to get started.

  • After filling out the register fields and receiving your confirmation email, you will be able to login to the portal using the new credentials. Once inside, click Download Centre to download the software.

  • Click on the appropriate client to install.

  • The install process asks you to choose a destination folder: it will choose the correct path automatically unless you change it.

  • Once the install is complete, you will need to register your machine. Name your computer something unique to you and use the username and password you created earlier. You will receive an email stating that your registration was successful.

  • Once registered, you will be able to right click on the CommVault icon located in the task manager on the bottom right of your screen and click Backup monitor.

  • From there you can initiate a backup of your files. CommVault defaults to backing up your desktop and my documents folders, but you can change that by going to the web console.

  • Be aware that backing up those folders for the first time can cause bandwidth issues if you share a network. Be sure to set your schedule in the web console or initiate the backup during off hours for minimal impact.

How do I scale my storage?

To increase your storage, simply send an email to sales@thinkon.com with your company details, some contact information and your storage goals. We will email you confirmation and take care of the rest. The change will be reflected on your next invoice.

Where does my data reside?

ThinkOn has 6 data centers located across Canada and one in the North East US which supports the Veeam workload. When your data arrives at the ThinkOn data center, we store it on high quality Hitachi brand Tier II storage. With ThinkOn, you can chose where you data will reside.
